Independent Living FAQ

Independent living is housing for active retirees who want to live in a senior-friendly community–normally apartments or small homes–but don’t want to worry about home maintenance or yard work hassle.

Independent living is not for all senior citizens. Those needing memory care or more personal care may need to find a memory care community that offers more support. Independent living is designed for seniors who are active and mobile. It is ideal for active retirees looking to downsize from their large homes and looking for a maintenance-free lifestyle. The minimum requirements for independent living are those that can complete activities of daily living: eating, dressing, getting into bed/chair, bathing, showering, and using the toilet. So if your loved one cannot complete these tasks, they either need a nursing home or perhaps an assisted living.

In 1997, our owners had the forethought before other retirement communities to add 43 assisted living apartments–offering a higher level of care.(link to graph for assisted living). Please check out our assisted living page for more information.

Many residents stay in our retirement community for 14-15 years, and we boast many second-generation residents.

We got you covered for a hassle-free low, maintenance lifestyle! In our independent living, we provide all of this included in your loved one’s rent:

  • Two delicious, nutritious meals served restaurant-style
  • Dedicated weekly housekeeper
  • Scheduled medical transportation
  • Packed daily activities
  • Emergency pull cord system
  • Daily’ good morning’ check-in button
  • Wellness center that includes blood pressure monitoring, assistance with prescriptions, and scheduling physician visits

Our retirement community is located conveniently in the heart of Baton Rouge (internal link to 55 and over)–right in the middle of mid-city’s revitalization. We are only 5 minutes from Town Center and Bocage Village shopping and restaurants. Our residents’ favorites include Whole Foods, Talbots, Fleming’s, Calvin’s Bocage Market, and more. By living in Williamsburg, you don’t have to worry about the busy interstate, congested College drive, and Siegen Lane traffic. Instead, you will be close to the Perkins overpass, Baton Rouge’s live music scene, and Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. If you want to feel connected to your city and community, there is no better place to be.

At Williamsburg, residents become family, and we mean it! Our seasoned staff and community strive to make you feel like this is your home. Over 50% of our staff has been with us for over ten years. Family members can be assured that their loved ones will always be treated with the utmost respect and care while staying at Williamsburg. Just look at our reviews (internal link to reviews) and almost 35 years of exceptional reputation. At Williamsburg, you never have to worry about safety or if there will be someone to help you. There will always be someone there 24/7.

Seniors thrive in an Independent Living Community

As our loved ones grow older, we often feel ‘guilty’ about encouraging them to move into an independent living community. At Williamsburg, there is absolutely no reason to feel that way. Instead, we treat every resident with the utmost respect and care. You can visit your loved ones just as much as you would if they were still living in their home (we even have a large guest apartment reserved just for family.) The bonus is you know there is always someone there to help or give them company.

A study from the CDC shows that seniors live a longer and better quality of life when others surround them. Communities like Williamsburg Senior Living Community can lead to a more fulfilling life.

Studies show that seniors live a longer and better quality of life when they are surrounded by others. After all, there are so many health risks to loneliness:

  • The effects of social isolation on the human body are alarming. It can lead to an increased risk for premature death that rivals smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity
  • Social isolation is associated with a 50% increase in dementia risk.
  • Loneliness is a leading cause of preventable deaths in America, with a 29% increased risk for heart disease and a 32% increase in stroke.
  • Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide are associated with loneliness
  • There are nearly four times increased risk of death, 68% increased risk of hospitalization, and 57% increased risk of emergency department visits for heart failure patients who have loneliness

So if you have an aging parent or loved one and want to be assured they are surrounded by people who treat them like family–look no further than Williamsburg Senior Living Community. You don’t have to worry that your loved one will be lonely or not have the essentials they need to thrive.
