What's the difference between Assisted Living vs. Independent Living vs. Nursing homes?

Residents with minor to moderate conditions that require some medical care should consider assisted living as an excellent option for those who seek an environment that offers independence with an advantage of the convenience and flexibility from the staff.

Assisted Living may provide a safe and secure low maintenance independent Living with a home-like feel; however, it’s not for every senior.

Determine what your preferences are and create a shortlist of senior facilities that accommodate your wants. Visit the community and communicate with the staff. Some senior living communities can offer intangible benefits beyond the attributes that are provided above.

Here at Williamsburg Senior Living Community, we offer independent living with optional assisted living amenities that allow you to age in a stable and luxurious place. If you would like a private* viewing, please contact Tonia Griffin as she can show you around the vibrant community.

An honest discussion on living preferences early on is critical amongst family members and the seniors involved.

AN ASSISTED AND INDEPENDENT LIVING OFFER?

Independent and assisted living both allow a senior to remain as independent as possible. These services also ease caregiver stress and help seniors increase longevity and well being. Both sets of communities give seniors their own private condo or apartment. However, there are some minor differences between the two.

Some Assisted Living offers twenty-four-hour assistance, which can be called with the press of a button. Assisted Living does provide some medical support. Independent Living, on the other hand, does not provide medical support. In contrast, it offers convenience that supports an independent and active life. Instead of help with personal meal preparation, a senior in an independent living will order meals or go to a restaurant style dining room.

WHAT DOES A NURSING HOME PROVIDE?

A nursing home provides on-site care of a skilled nurse, and/or physical, and speech therapists are required for a residence with a more complex medical condition. It also provides 24-hour monitoring. And provides reassurance from loved ones who are at medical risk.

Both the nursing home and assisted living provide medication assistance, life enrichment activities, support services, security and ADA approved facilities (handrails, ease of access for wheelchair, emergency call systems), and meal delivery.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT AN ASSISTED LIVING HOME?

Including Assistance daily living activities (ADL):
Services may include: (check with the facility if they provide any of the services)
Adaptive planning to the senior’s needs
Maintenance-free home
Home furnished luxury decor
Privacy
Scheduled activities: Provides an opportunity to socialize
More cost-effective than nursing homes
An independent life can be achieved through assisted living services for seniors who have early dementia or any physical limitations. Families can feel safe with on-site medical care, which is not all-encompassing, like nursing homes.
Seniors who do not need full-time attention in a nursing home but need assistance and a level of care appropriate to their needs could be met through assisted living. Service includes meals, transportation, medication, and daily activities like bathing and dressing.

Here is the level of care you can expect from Williamsburg.
A senior’s health situation can change quickly among older adults; having an assisted living staff that can quickly adapt to the seniors living arrangement is beneficial.
Williamsburg Senior Living Community comprises active seniors with vibrant energy who can manage most of their routines without help.

WHAT ARE SOME DIFFERENCES FROM A NURSING HOME?

Nursing consists of varying degrees of on-site medical staff such as skilled nurse
Most nursing homes have a more institutionalized approach to staffing operations
Assisted and/ or independent living home resembles an upscale condo or apartment within the community
Nursing homes tend to share rooms with other residences
Maintenance-free lifestyle is the core service in assisted living, while nursing care is utilized in nursing homes.
Independent and assisted living residents usually have privacy, unlike nursing homes.

WHAT BENEFITS CAN BE EXPECTED FROM AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY?

Assisted living facilities provide personal privacy and freedom with a home-like environment that is ideal for most seniors. Seniors can objectively eliminate their worry from routine tasks and home upkeep.
Seniors can live independently, have control, and can have the freedom to optimize their lifestyle. Williamsburg provides an opportunity for the residence to socialize every day with other adults. Our scheduled activities are offered by our activities director Kylie Roberson.
Lower monthly out-of-pocket costs can be expected from an assisted living due to the ongoing cost of 24-hour monitoring, medical staffing, and medical care that are usually provided by a nursing home.
The cons
